“Do I need an architect?” is a question I hear often. While an architect is not always required for a project, certain neighborhoods and municipalities do require a licensed professional for construction permitting. So in these circumstances, the answer is yes. But what about the areas that don’t require licensed professionals? Simple renovations might seem easy to tackle without professional help–that is until you find yourself stuck, pinned between a doorway that’s too small carrying a piece of plywood that’s too big.
Luckily, architects are seasoned professionals skilled at coming up with innovative design plans that consider these possible complications before they occur. While an architect is not always a legal requirement, there are added benefits to hiring one, as their expertise in structural design could prevent you from getting stuck in any unwanted doorways.
Consider how long you plan on living in the home you want to build. Is it a temporary home or your Forever Home? If you plan to live in this home for a while, hiring an architect is well worth the cost, as their professional expertise will provide profound benefits that you’ll be able to experience and enjoy for years in the comfort of your personalized Forever Home.
An architect can help your wildest design dreams come true! If you have needs that reach beyond what a cookie-cutter home can offer or if you desire custom solutions specific to your family’s lifestyle, using an architect is the way to go. Architects go above and beyond when it comes to custom designs, and are the best way to make your visions come to life.
Do you have a working knowledge of design and construction? While you may feel comfortable tackling these challenging aspects of building a home, due to family and work obligations, you may not have enough time to dedicate solely to this project. An architect does! An architect will spend the time to ensure successful completion of every task involved, from the obvious ones down to the tiniest details.
The building process can be frustrating and draining. Many homeowners don’t want to be burdened with the challenges that will inevitably pop up. Employing the professional assistance of an architect will mitigate your involvement on the tedious day-to-day aspects of your project, so you can focus on making the important and exciting decisions. Let an architect relieve some of your stress and guide you through this exciting process.
Are you sensitive to design issues, such as awkward proportions and poor color combinations? An architect is someone who is in-tune with the design aspects and issues that appear on every job. Working with an architect can spare you the headache of poor design and will ensure everything is perfect in your completed home.
Will you be investing substantial funds into this project? If so, utilizing an architect is a sure way to make certain that you get the most out of your investment.
Even homeowners with the skills necessary to complete a project on their own experience challenges. Sometimes, you can’t seem to get it right. If you are having trouble putting together your ideas, an architect can help you translate them into a workable plan that meets your desires and expectations.
If you are still on the fence about whether to hire an architect for your project, I encourage you to call an architect and set up a “get acquainted” meeting. Residential architects tend to be passionate about creating and explaining the process of wonderful living environments! My office offers a free session for clients considering new homes.

This is a great article about what architects can help with during the designing process. My mother-in-law and father-in-law found a very nice piece of land and are getting ready to build their first home. They have only started to play around with some designs, but I think they would really benefit from hiring an architect since this will be the home they retire in.
Wendy, thanks for the comment. You are right, when it comes to building a “forever home,” having an architect can be a tremendous value. People don’t know what they don’t know. So getting the advice (at a minimum) of someone who “knows” design for grace-in-place, can be a game changer. Whether it’s ensuring that hallways and doors are sized correctly, specifying low maintenance materials, or helping select fixtures that are easy to use with diminished strength, consulting with architect can save time, frustration, and money.
I agree that hiring an architect to design a house would be a smart thing. They have the experience, and can come up with some cool designs. I hope to find a really good one when I can build my house.
My husband and I are wanting to remodel our kitchen, but it’s been hard trying to find the time to re-design it on our own. You mentioned that hiring an architect can help, as they will handle all of the basics while involving you only with the important decision. I think that this could really help to make the process easier and less stressful.
You are right sir because when we are planning to build a building then, time and customization is must….So thanks for sharing your experience with us.
My brother wants to have a house built for his family. He is a unique guy, and he wants to make sure that his home is different than the others on the block. I didn’t realize architects can help create plans for a home that is tailored specifically for your family and can’t be found all over the place. That sounds like something my brother would enjoy.
I can see why home design would depend on the duration of your stay. My wife and I want to find a dream home where we could raise our kids. I definitely think that we should find a residential drafting service that could help me us to make a home that would best suit our lifestyle.
My wife and I want to do some home renovations but we have no idea where to start so we were thinking about hiring an architect to help out. I like that you mention how an architect can help you make custom solutions that are tailored specifically for your family their lifestyle. We wanted to make a special playroom for the kids so this sounds like exactly what we need. Thanks for sharing!
It was really nice that you pointed out how important it is to choose an architect if I ever intend to have custom solutions tailored to meet my needs. My sister keeps mentioning something about a customized part of the wall, but I do not entirely understand what she meant. But since she wants something that is tailored to fit her standards, then I guess that is enough of a reason to consider hiring an architect.
