The American Institute of Architects (AIA) recently released its Q1 2023 Home Design Trends Survey. The survey shows that homeowners are focusing on long-term value and sustainability when making design choices, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. Here’s a look at the key findings:
Bathroom Design Trends
The survey found that 33% of architects saw an increase in the number and size of bathrooms in their design projects. The most popular feature in bathrooms was larger walk-in showers, which became 60% more popular than last year. Other favorite bathroom features included designs that are adaptable for all ages (52%), spa-like environments (44%), and more natural light (38%). Some bathroom products in higher demand were doorless showers (60%) and smart toilets (27%).
Kitchen Design Trends
For kitchens, 52% of architects said there was more demand for larger kitchens. The most wanted feature was a butler’s pantry (53%). Other popular kitchen features included outdoor kitchens (52%), more natural light (46%), and kitchens that connect to the living space (28%). The most requested kitchen products were induction cooktops (57%), hidden or disguised lighting (36%), and drinking water filtration systems (33%).
Even though kitchens and bathrooms are getting more attention, homeowners are being cautious about making upgrades because of high borrowing costs and uncertain home prices. The report also showed that project billings, inquiries, and design contracts have dropped.
Architect firms across the U.S. reported a decline in business during the fourth quarter, with the Midwest seeing a big drop over the past six months. The demand for custom and luxury homes grew slightly (1%), but most housing sectors showed a decrease compared to the same quarter in 2021. Remodeling demand is still growing but at a slower pace.
