AGE-IN-PLACE REMODELING TIPS

Before you put that wall back, does your home provide “Grace in Place”?  If not, below are some remodeling tips from the National Association of Home Builders to consider for Age-in-Place remodeling.

1.  HALLWAYS

• Make hallways a minimum of 36-inches wide, wider if possible.
• Make sure hallways are well lit.

2.  INTERIOR DOORS

• For accessibility, opt for a 36-in, or 3-ft door to give a clear width of 32-in.
• Replace doorknobs with levered handles to accommodate arthritis and other aging ailments.

3.  WINDOWS

• Windows add natural light.  So, if possible, use windows with a lower sill height and easy-to-operate hardware.

4.  CABINETRY

• If reinstalling upper wall cabinetry, put them 3-in lower than conventional height.
• For base cabinets, install roll-out trays and Lazy Susans or pull-down shelving.

5.  BATHROOMS

• Have at least 1 wheelchair maneuverable bath with a 5-ft turning radius clear space.
• Consider installing bracing in walls around tub/shower, shower seat, & toilet for installation of grab bars.

6.  FAUCETS

• Use lever handles or pedal-controlled faucets with thermostatic or anti-scald controls.

7.  FLOORS

• Make sure you have 1-floor level throughout the home for easier mobility.
• Use smooth, non-glare, slip-resistant surfaces.
